PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Jaguar Volleyball program earned its second win of the week on Saturday, Oct. 5 – beating Fayetteville State 3-0 after they fell to UNC Pembroke 3-0 in the English E. Jones Center.
After dropping the first set of the Peach Belt Conference match 25-19, the Jags (3-12, 0-7 PBC) rallied from a deficit in set two to tie it at 25-all and force extra points. UNCP knocked the next two points to endure the Jags' comeback and take a 2-0 lead in the match. GRU outhit the Braves .270 to .150 in set three and brought it back to a 22-21 mark on junior Kristen Koch's kill. A bad set from GRU and a UNCP kill and service ace sealed the Jags' fate – falling 25-21 for the set and match.
Koch's 11 kills led the team and junior Paige Tuttle and senior Jenna Keeler added eight and seven. Junior Chandler Mass recorded 30 assists and in the digs column, junior Maggie Darling dug a team-leading 13 shots, while Koch posted 12 and Mass 10.
Taking a quick break, the Jags returned to the floor at 2:00 p.m. to battle Fayetteville State in a non-conference match. GRU prevailed 3-0 and held Fayetteville below 15 points in sets one and two. Koch paced the Jags again with 14 kills, while Keeler added 11. Mass handed out 38 assists and Darling (22) and Catherine DeSilvester (13) handled the digs. Shavon Shaw of Fayetteville State knocked six kills, Molly Farrington had nine assists and JaMisha Jordan had 15 digs.
GRU hosts USC Aiken in a PBC rivalry match on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 7:00 p.m. in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
