Women’s Track Notches Sixth At Conference Championships

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Jaguar women's outdoor track and field team took sixth out of nine teams at the 2015 Peach Belt Conference Championships hosted by the University of Montevallo from April 16-18.


The Shorter Hawks won both the men's and women's championships and Nova Southeastern finished runner up for both the men's and women's as well.

The PBC announced the Track Sportsmanship, Elite 15, and Coach of the Year honors as well. GRU's Taylor Coxwell of the men's team and JaVoni Canty of the men's team were named to the PBC Sportsmanship team. For all winners click here

The Jaguars began the three-day event on Thursday, April 16. In the 1500m race, GRU was represented by Olivia Rodriguez and Amber Palermo. Rodriguez finished eighth in the field in 5:01.44 and Palermo set her new personal record – taking 17th in 5:07.78.

Jordan Humphrey notched seventh of 13 in the women's 10K, finishing in 38:49.52, while Dejah Johnson and Adanna Thompson finished ninth and 10th in the long jump competition. JaVoni Canty finished in the top five in the hammer throw, with a distance of 39.35m to earn her fifth place.

In preliminary action on Thursday, Sabiyah Broderick took sixth in the 100m hurdles in 16.89 and eighth in the 200m dash in 28.95. In the 100m dash, Dejah Johnson carded a seventh-place mark and Adanna Thompson took 18th.

Broderick went on to place second overall in the heptathlon and took first in the 800m for the heptathlon and first in the javelin throw. Morgan Ryffe and Tia Ponsell set huge personal records in the 3000m steeplechase.

Ryffe placed third in 11:33.64 and Ponsell carded sixth in 11:48.96. Heather Hammett was also close to winning the 400m hurdles. She took second in 1:04.1.
