UNCP Snaps AU’s Five Game Win Streak

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University men's basketball team hosted the UNC Pembroke Braves for a Peach Belt Conference contest in Christenberry Fieldhouse on Wednesday night and fell to 95-81 to the league-leading Braves. The loss snapped a five game win streak for the Jaguars.


The game pushed Augusta to 13-9 overall and 10-6 in the PBC, while UNCP is now 18-4 and 14-2 in the league. The Jaguars host the Georgia College Bobcats for 2018 Homecoming this Saturday, Feb. 10 in Christenberry Fieldhouse. The women's game tips off at 1:30 p.m. and the men follow at 3:30 p.m.

Augusta shot over 50 percent from the floor, but the Braves shot 57.4 percent in a hot-shooting battle. The Jags outrebounded UNCP 31-29, but the Braves put up 40 points to AU's 22 in the paint. Each team matched 10 turnovers, but the Braves hit five more treys on the night.


Senior Tamyrik Fields scored double-figure points for the 18th time this season with 25 points to lead AU. He has eight games with 20 or more points this season. Junior Tyvez Monroe scored 21 points and added nine rebounds while sophomore Mikkel Kolstad carded 12 points of the bench. Fields ranks second in the PBC in points, points per game, and field goals.


Augusta took an early lead and didn't relinquish it until the 6:20 mark in the first half when UNCP tied the game 27-27. A three pointer from the Braves gave them their first lead at 30-27 and they remained ahead for the remainder of first-half play. In the last five minutes of the first half, UNCP outscored the Jaguars 15-10 and took the half on top 45-39.

UNCP strengthened its lead to nine with 11:28 remaining in the clock and they stayed ahead for the rest of the game to win 91-85. The Braves built a 16-point lead and held of Augusta to remain first in the conference standings.
