No. 7 seeded Jaguars drop opening match of conference tourney to No. 2 seed Flagler
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The No. 7 seeded Augusta University Jaguars (19-14) met No. 2 Flagler (21-7) in the Peach Belt Conference Quarterfinals on Tuesday night and the Jags dropped a 3-0 match in their third meeting of the year.
Augusta went 19-14 overall and 8-10 in the league in the 2015 regular season. Making the start to begin the tournament for the Jags was senior setter Alyssa Latham, juniors Rachel Windle and Cat DeSilvester, sophomores Kali Boatwright, Paige Elliott and Sadie Thurston, and freshman Savanna Gonzales.
In a match with 31 tied scores and 10 total lead changes, Gonzales led Augusta with 10 kills and nine digs, Windle recorded nine kills, Boatwright 11 digs, seven kills, and three aces, and senior Katie Beresford had six kills. Latham posted 29 assists and 12 digs and Desilvester posted 18 digs.
The score was tied 11 times alone in the opening set. The Saints were on set-point at 24-21 and after a Flagler service error, the Jags made the comeback on kills by Gonzales and Windle. Windle had five kills on one error in set one and Boatwright carded three aces. Flagler held on for a 26-24 extra-point victory.
Latham set up Elliott and Gonzales for two Augusta kills to open set two. Flagler gained a three-point lead, but the match returned to a point-for-point affair. Down 22-20, the Jags used a Katie Beresford kill and Flagler error to tie the set. Windle put the Jags on set point with a kill from the middle hitter position, but a Jaguar service error let the Saints back in where they overtook the set for their second 26-24 victory.
The Saints stayed ahead for the most of set three, but a 4-0 Jaguar made it closer at 20-19. Down 24-21, the resilient Jags kept the rally alive off an onslaught of Flagler kills, but a dig found the low-ceiling rafters of the Flagler Gymnasium to give the Saints the three-set win.
The Jaguars ended the regular season with numerous players atop the PBC statistical rankings. Senior Alyssa Latham had the second most assists per set (10.31 aps) and the fifth most total assists (887). Junior Cat DeSilvester ranked fifth in digs (466) and ninth in digs per set (4.21 dps).
Junior Rachel Windle's .292 attack percentage was the sixth best in the league and she was seventh in blocks (86) and eighth in assisted blocks (75). Sophomore Sadie Thurston recorded the eighth most assists per set (7.39 aps) and senior Katie Beresford ranked ninth in attack percentage (.262).
