Jaguars blank the Braves in Peach Belt Conference action
AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University women's volleyball team snapped a four-game losing streak and downed the visiting UNC Pembroke Braves 3-0 on Friday night in Peach Belt Conference inside Christenberry Fieldhouse.
Augusta (15-13, 6-10 PBC) swept the Braves (7-20, 2-11 PBC) earlier this season on the road on Sept. 29 and the Jags did the same in their second meeting, led by freshman Savanna Gonzales' 11 kills. Kali Boatwright added 10 kills and setter Sadie Thurston posted 35 assists. JaNhea Beisner had 13 digs and Cat DeSilvester chipped in 10 digs for the Jags.
An assisted block from Rachel Windle and Kali Boatwright started the scoring on the night. UNCP held the slight advantage for the opening points, but Cat DeSilvester stole the momentum on the service line and guided the Jags to a 12-7 lead. The Braves slowed down the Jaguar offense with a timeout and reversed the score to 17-17.
A block gave the Braves a one-point lead and they stayed ahead until Augusta tied the set again at 22-all on a few service aces. Senior Katie Beresford posted an unassisted kill and a block to hold off UNCP and take set-one 25-23. Augusta led 14-9 at point in set two, but the Braves charged back and scored eight in a row for a 14-9 lead.
The Jags rallied down the stretch and out-killed the Braves 19-9 in set two to take another 25-23 win to go up 2-0 in the match. Augusta capped off the night with a 25-20 set-three win to seal the victory.
The Jags host 2015 Senior Day celebration on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 2:00 p.m. when Augusta takes on the Francis Marion Patriots in Christenberry Fieldhouse. Seniors Katie Beresford, Kailla Baptiste, and Alyssa Latham are being recognized for the contributions to the program throughout their careers in Augusta. All three seniors have been pivotal in the Jaguars' success and all three helped guide the Jaguars to their best season in program history last year in 2014.
