Augusta University moves to 14-10, 5-8 in the Peach Belt Conference
COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Augusta University women's volleyball team dropped a Peach Belt Conference match 3-1 to Columbus State on Wednesday night, evening the regular-season meetings between the Jaguars and CSU Cougars.
Plagued by injuries, the Jaguars (14-10, 5-8 PBC) came back from a six-point deficit on set point of the second set to even the match, but the Cougars (4-20, 1-11 PBC) were too much on the their home floor to outlast Augusta 3-1. The Jags and Cougars split this year's regular-season meetings as Augusta won a 3-2 match on Sept. 18 at home in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
In their second meeting the opening set went to Columbus State 25-23 with both offenses matching 15 kills. Junior Rachel Windle started with four kills in the opening set for Augusta and Blair Bolton, Kali Boatwright, and Jordan Bickett each recorded three.
Windle had a team-best nine kills and added 13 digs and an ace. Junior Jordan Bickett added eight kills and 20 digs and Boatwright recorded seven kills with 18 digs. Sophomore Sadie Thurston provided 35 assists and 13 digs for the Jags and junior JaNhea Beisner had 15 digs.
Thurston set up Windle for the opening Augusta kill of set two, but the Cougars stayed ahead for the opening points. Down 24-18, the Jags sparked a 6-0 run to tie the match and outlasted the Cougars 30-28 in an extended second set to tie the match.
CSU owned set three 25-16 and took the match 3-1 with a 25-19 fourth set victory. The score was tied 24 times in the match, but the Cougars recorded a better attack percentage in all four sets to avenge their early-season loss.
The Jaguars play at Armstrong State on the road in Savannah, Ga., Friday, Oct. 30 at 7:00 p.m., for another Peach Belt match.
