Augusta sweeps non-conference Newberry to move to 12-6 on season

AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Augusta University women's volleyball team (12-6, 4-4 PBC) defeated the Newberry Wolves in a straight-sets non-conference win on Tuesday night at Christenberry Fieldhouse.

The Jaguars came out strong, winning eight of the first 10 points. Newberry quickly came back though to keep the first set close. A kill from Paige Elliot at 21-16 seemed to be what the Jags needed and they rode the momentum to take the first set 25-21.

The Jaguars kept the attack coming in the second set, with an emphatic kill by Kailla Baptiste to start the set off. The second set was a much closer battle than the previous set, seeing 12 tie scores. At 16-16, the Jags won a momentum-shifting point and went on to win the next three points to jump out to a 20-16 lead. Despite a late charge by the Wolves, a deciding kill at 24-23 by Rachel Windle gave the Jaguars the second set and a 2-0 lead.

Augusta trailed early in the third set, falling into an 8-2 hole, prompting a timeout by Coach Sharon Quarles. Newberry carried their strong start out to an 11-4 lead. Augusta subbed in Kali Boatwright and won four of the next five points to get them back into the third set. An attack error by Newberry tied the set at 15 before two consecutive kills by Baptiste gave the Jags their first lead of the set.

A decisive block by both Kali Boatwright and Paige Elliott finished off the third set and gave the Jaguars a 3-0 straight-set victory over Newberry.

Baptiste and Windle led the way for the Jags with 13 and nine kills respectively. Alyssa Latham added to her total of assists with another 34 tonight and Cat DeSilvester made some remarkable digs in the game, totaling 22 on the night.

The Jaguars will travel to Milledgeville, Ga. on Saturday, Oct. 17 to take on the Georgia College Bobcats at 7:00 p.m.
