Jaguars fall 3-2 after taking two-set lead in Peach Belt Conference play
AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University women's volleyball team won the opening two sets over Flagler College on Friday night, but the Saints rallied to take three sets for the win in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
The Jaguars (10-4, 4-3 PBC) entered the match on a three-game win streak. A strong start in sets one and two gave the Jaguars the edge, but the Saints (9-3, 2-1 PBC) owned the attack percentage in the final three sets to come from behind for the win.
Freshman Kali Boatwright led the Jags with 16 kills and 23 digs in the match, while Alyssa Latham provided 43 assists and Cat Desilvester 21 digs. Jordan Bickett chipped in 11 kills for the Jags and notched four aces as well.
Flagler's Sara Davis led all players with 17 kills and Tara Savisky dealt 44 assists for a match high.
The Jags produced a .400 attack percentage in the opening set and held Flagler to a .148 mark. Jordan Bickett delivered three straight aces in the first set to help build the Jags to an eventual 15-7 lead after two Boatwright kills. The Saints showed life late in the first set and scored five straight to make it 20-12 heading into a Jaguar timeout, but the Jags hung on for a close 25-22 set-one win thanks to a Katie Beresford kill.
Augusta won the opening point in set two, but the Saints took the quick lead. The Jaguars compiled enough kills to find themselves in a 15-15 tie and a .250 attack percentage to Flagler's .143 helped Augusta take a 2-0 lead on the night.
Nine kills and eight errors plagued the Jags in set three as the momentum shifted to Flagler's side of the net. The Saints out-killed the Jags 33-28 across the final three sets and outlasted the Jaguars. The Jags struck first in set four, but Flagler jumped to a 6-1 run and held the lead to take the set 25-19.
In set five, a block from Bolton and Windle evened the set at 5-5. Later, another block from Beresford and Bolton made it 7-6 Jags, but Flagler poured on more kills and stole a 10-8 lead. The Saints hung on for a 15-8 set-five final to steal the night.
The Jags continue league play on Saturday, Oct. 3 with a 2:00 p.m. match with the Armstrong Pirates in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
